The Day of Africa was celebrated in the MFA of Ukraine

On May 23, 2019 a solemn annual celebration of the Day of Africa dedicated to the topic of "Participation of Ukraine in UN Peacekeeping Operations in the African Continent" was held at the premises of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

The event was attended by the Members of the Parliament of Ukraine, Heads of foreign diplomatic missions and offices of international organizations, including the UN, accredited in Ukraine, the representatives of non-governmental organizations.

The State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine H.E. Andriy Zayats emphasized in his speech to the audience that the broad cooperation with the African states is a priority of the foreign policy agenda of Ukraine.

It was mentioned about a need for a fresh impetus to the African vector of Ukraine's foreign policy in order to organically combine the significant capabilities of Ukraine with the needs of African countries. This would provide a more dynamic connection with the countries of the region, and also would favour the Ukrainian companies and technologies in entering the markets of African countries.

The State Secretary handed the MFA congratulation letters for defending the interests of Ukraine and high professionalism to 13 representatives of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine who had participated in the United Nations peacekeeping operations in Africa.

In general, since 1992 more than 44,000 Ukrainian militarymen have taken part in 27 peacekeeping operations in 19 countries around the world. During these operations 54 Ukrainians gave their lives for the sake of peace and prosperity of the peoples of Africa. In 2018, 297 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and personnel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine participated in the peacekeeping missions on the African continent in DR of Congo, Southern Sudan and Abyei. On January 9, 2019 the President of Ukraine signed a Decree on sending the national personnel to the UN Mission in Mali.

Marking the contribution of Ukraine in building stability and security in Africa, where our state had participated in more than 20 UN peacekeeping operations, the MFA State Secretary Andriy Zayats emphasized the extraordinary importance of launching a UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbass, that should bring security to the Ukrainians living in this region.
